Training for Health Professionals

The Parent-Infant Research Institute at Austin Health is committed to providing quality accessible clinical treatment for families with young children experiencing difficulties. PIRI is involved in cutting edge clinical research, service provision and has increasingly been involved in the dissemination of information and training for other health professionals involved in the pathway of care for these families.

We are proud to be able to offer a number of training workshops on request (listed below) and a 2011 a seminar program. All topics will be available from Austin Health or if there are sufficient numbers training can be provided to you at your work place. Specific topics of interest can also be accommodated by arrangement.

As part of the DHS initiative we also offer Maternal & Child Health Nurses training in the North Eastern and Hume regions. The topics available are listed in the Maternal and Child Health Nurse Training Cycle.

PIRI has been very actively involved in providing training to Maternal & Child Health Nurses, Midwives, General Practitioners, Psychologists and other health professionals.

We have an ongoing committment to provide clinical placement for doctoral and masters psychology students from LaTrobe University, Swinburne, Australian Catholic University, Melbourne University and RMIT.

We have also had a international placements from Indonesia, France, Italy and Sweden.

Treating Postnatal Depression Workshop 2011

25th and 26th August 2011

Cost: $600 (incl GST)

Objectives:

  • To review and develop basic skills in the assessment of postnatal depression
  • To understand key theories of postnatal depression
  • To build on existing CBT skills required to run the Treating Postnatal Depression Program
  • To review the published manual and discuss ways of extending the program as required
  • To develop approaches for individual work with mothers and infants, based on Treating Postnatal Depression Program principles
  • To introduce attendees to mother-infant and interactional observation skills

Mother Infant Interactions Workshop

10th November 2011

Cost:$220.00 (incl GST)
Venue: Austin Health

Objectives:
To develop mother infant interaction observation skills, compare various assessment tools and introduce the HUGS intervention program for infants of women with postnatal depression.


  • To understand key components of a ‘good enough’ interaction and the impact of postnatal depression.
  • Practice observational skills required to assess the relationship.
  • To introduce an approach for intervening with mothers and infants following Postnatal Depression the HUGS Program.
