objectives of the STePPS CRE

Addressing Critical Gaps in Perinatal Mental Health Support

At the heart of the STePPS CRE lies a profound commitment to addressing the critical gaps that currently hinder access to perinatal mental health services. We recognise that factors such as stigma, rural isolation, financial constraints, and workforce shortages pose significant barriers to care.

By leveraging better knowledge, cutting-edge technology and fostering a culture of innovation, we aim to dismantle these barriers and ensure that every Australian family has access to the support they deserve during this crucial period.

Key features and objectives of the STePPS CRE include:

  • Cutting-Edge Research: STePPS CRE will conduct ground-breaking research to better understand how to create and deliver evidence-based interventions that can be delivered electronically, ensuring accessibility for women regardless of their geographic location. It will address implementation barriers, customise treatment, examine the impact on partners and infants, and address diversity and gaps in existing treatment options.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: STePPS CRE is a global collaboration that brings together a distinguished group of national and international experts from diverse fields, including leading clinicians and researchers in perinatal depression, psychology, psychiatry, public health, digital health, health economics, and technology. This fosters collaboration and innovation in perinatal mental health research. Collaboration among STePPS CRE investigators provides a strong foundation for delivering training, building workforce capacity, and driving translation into policy and practice.
  • Knowledge Translation: STePPS CRE is committed to translating research findings into practical tools and resources that can be easily accessed and utilised by healthcare providers, pregnant women, new mothers, their families, and caregivers.
  • Improved e-Mental Health Interventions and Increased Treatment Uptake: STePPS CRE will further develop interventions with new trials to address knowledge gaps, replicability, stigma, rural isolation, lack of workforce capacity, and inequity of access.
  • Integrated e-Health with Traditional Services: STePPS CRE will conduct implementation research to facilitate evidence translation, systems integration, and impact assessment. It will also integrate e-Health with traditional services in a cohesive stepped-care model.
  • Health Policy and Workforce Capacity: STePPS CRE will promote national and global collaboration to drive the effective transfer of research outcomes into health policy. It will also focus on building workforce and research capacity and training future leaders.

A Collaborative Journey Towards a Brighter Future

The STePPS CRE team boasts an unparalleled track record of groundbreaking research and effective translation, consistently delivering impactful solutions to improve perinatal mental health outcomes.

The PIRI team is deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our global partners, collaborators, and consumers who have contributed to the success of the STePPS CRE so far. Together, we are committed to building a brighter future for all Australian families, where perinatal mental health is recognised as a cornerstone of well-being and every parent is equipped with the resources they need to thrive.
